Out of all the sporting competitions, windsurfing was again the most
important event, due to a high technical content in the Olympic speciality and to the
talents of the participants from all five continents. Around 100 competitors, including
some of the best in the world ranking, took part in the Men and Womens Competitions
for both individual success and for the chance to take their nation to the highest step on
the podium. Italy, thanks to the total points gained in the general results by 2 of its
best competitors, Riccardo Giordano and Paco Wirz, won the Cup beating Australia by just 9
points. Lars Kleppich and Adam Quinn who made up the Kangaroo team, finished
with 73 points, ahead of New Zealand, represented by the brother and sister team of
Barbera and Bruce Kendall (144 points). They were followed by Japan, Germany, Poland,
Tunisia, USA, Austria, Canada, Latvia, Great Britain and France. The Australian, Lars
Kleppich, won the overall individual competition of this 14th Windsurf World Festival 1999
(a competition which had men and women competing together) ahead of the Italian, Riccardo
Giordano and the Austrian, Chris Sieber. Absent from any of the high placings was Aaron
Macintosh, the multi-titled New Zealander. First of the women was Barbara Kendall (12th in
the overall results) ahead of the Australian Natasha Stugers (15th overall) and Alessandra
Sensini (18th overall).
Lars Kleppich excelled in the Gran Premio di Sicilia individual regatta too
(counting for the ISAF world ranking), winning all 3 of the races into which it was
divided (Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th). In second place, Riccardo Giordano and
third, Chris Sieber. Among the other Italians competing, Paco Wirz took the 5th position,
Alessandro Alberti, 7th and Marco Casagrande came in 10th. A significant result was Marco
Ferrera coming 13th (he was 2nd in the Junior competition, won by the Tunisian, Khaled
Marouene).
Alessandra Sensini (bronze medal in Atlanta and already qualified for the Olympics in
Sydney in 2000) came 2nd for the Women, just behind the New Zealander, Barbara Kendall
(gold in Barcelona, silver in Atlanta and a gold at the recent World Championships) with
the Australian, Jessica Crisp coming in 3rd.
