VELA: CONCLUSA

PRESS RELEASE
THIRD DAY OF ONE TON CUP, IC45 (EX COREL 45) WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN
MARSEILLE (FRANCE)-1st September 2000
After the third day of races of the One Ton Cup/IC45 World Championship
once again the overall results changed: after the discussion of protests
lodeged, "Atalanti X" (late in the evening) was not anymore the leader due
to the disqualification in the first race of the day (7th) and French
"Cavale Bleu" could take the lead. So the last day where some more two
races were scheduled seemed that should have been a very hot day.
On last day of one of the smartest sailing international event weather
conditions has been still demanding with the mistral blowing over sail area
of the South bay of Marseille up to 25 knots, with gusts up to 30/35 knots.
The Swedish "Investor" helmed by his owner Thomas Blixt is the fastest
across the starting line of the first race. The yachts chosing the right
side of the area are ahead of the fleet and "Cavale Bleu" in the first one
to round the first windward mark. Other yachts, "Atalanti X", "Faster
K-Yote II" and "Serono" that decided to sail the left side are a little bit
backwards. In the second windward leg "Cavale Bleu" once again choose the
right side but it is not the the right choice as she is fourth at mark
rounding. At the end of the second running leg British "Indulgence" helmed
by Adrian Stead takes the lead and then can be the first one to cross the
finishing line. In the last leg "Cavale Bleu" has her spinnaker blown out
and looses her position crossing the finishing line on 6th position. "La
Casera" helmed by American Chris Larson is second rignt in front of
"Atalanti X". Looking at red flags displayed during the first and
penultimate race it seems that many protests are going to be lodged.
Immediately the last race is fired, the wind is bulding up more and more.
"Serono" and "Cavale Bleu" are the fastest at start .
"Indulgence" is
always in the right place and at the end takes the lead and wins the second
race of the day. A perfect way to finish the championship. Meanwhile there
is a close fight among the other yachts of the fleet: "Cavale Bleu" keeps
her second position until the finishing not allowing any other yachts to
overcome her. At the second windward mark rounding "Faster K-Yote II" is
following "Serono" and "Atalanti X", but on next windward leg while
sailing
a little more offshore looking for a best wind she can round the mark in
front of these yachts. On the last downwind leg "Serono" and "Atalanti
X"
can once again overcome "Faster K-Yote II" and the Greek boat is
third to
cross the finishing line.
At the end of the 11 race series the French "Cavale Bleu" owned by Michel
Duquenne with Thierry Peponnet (one gold and one bronze Olympic medals in
his palmares in 470 class) helming and Luc Gelluseau (manager of French
America's Cup Challenge in Auckland) calling tactics is the 2000 IC45 World
Champion. Luc Gellusseau wins twice the One Ton Cup - sailed with the one
design boat IC45 (ex Corel 45) chosen to be the Big Boat in the next
Champagne Mumm Admiral's Cup - as last year he was on board "Fater K-Yote
II" that won in Spain. The overall results is very interesting as the most
part of the team included non-professional sailors scuhe the owner's son
and som friends.
Secon in the overall results is "Atalanti X" owned by Greek George
Andreadis and third is "Indulgence" owned by British Graham Walker.

corso a Marsiglia sono state disputate altre quattro prove su percorso a bastone in

PRESS RELEASE
THIRD DAY OF ONE TON CUP, IC45 (EX COREL 45) WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN
MARSEILLE (FRANCE)-31st August 2000
Eventually the mistral start to blow on the sailplan of Marseille (South Bay) where a
fleet of 12 yachts is taking part in the One Ton Cup, the World Championship of the IC45
one design class. On the third day of racing some more 4 races could be sailed on
windward/leeward courses and the figh is gettting more and more close especially among the
first five yachts of the overall results.
After the first two days (5 races sailed) the leader of the fleet was not anymore the red
yacht of German Ortwin Kandler "Faster K-Yote II" due to a
disqualification in the fourth race (she was protested by "Serono" bacause of a
too close tack) and and OCS in the fifth so at the end of the day the leader was
"Cavale bleu" followed by "Atalanti X".
In the typical weather conditions of Marseille (blue sky and wind up to 20/25 knots) the
first race was fired in time at 11.00 hrs:"Atalanti X" the IC45 helmed by
American Ken Read (he has been the helmsman of "Team Dennis Conner" at last
America's Cup) could be the fastest across the line at gun deciding to sail the left side
of the sail plan. That choice proved to be the right on as the Greek could lead the fleet
along since the start to the finishing line where the Greek yacht was followed by
"Faster K-Yote II" and
"Cavale bleu".
On second race British "Indulgence" missed only for few meters the first place:
after a very good start of skipper Adrian Stead could keep the lead all the race long and
only just before the finishing line "Atalanti X"
could ovecome him and win anothe race. Third one to cross the finishing line was
"Cavale bleu".
Once again "Atalanti X" in the best one to cross the staring line but
immediately it becomes clear that the "match race" shauld have been between
"Cavale bleu" and "Faster K-Yote II": they go on all the racing long
with very close tacks. At last windward mark rounding "Atalanti X" has to make a
360° penalty turn after a crossing with Welsh "Babbalaas" skippered by Italian
Tommaso Chieffi and Swiss "Serono" takes advantage of the situation
and wins the race.
On third race "Cavale Bleu" had and injured member of the crew that had to be
taken off so they had some problems and an individual recall that made them late across
the finishing line (10th) losing in theis way the leadership in the overall results.
"Serono" finishes the race with her second victory in the same day followed in
few seconds by "Babbalaas" and "Atalanti X" that is now the
leader of the results. If some more two races
will be sailed tomorrow as scheduled the yachts will have the chance to discard the two
worst results so at least the first four yachts ov the overall results could have the
chance to win the championship.

PRESS RELEASE
SHIFTY LIGHT WINDS ON FIRST DAY OF ONE TON CUP, IC45 (EX COREL 45) WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIP IN MARSEILLE (FRANCE)
Rain and shifty winds on first day of One Ton Cup, IC45 (ex Corel 45) World Championship
that started today in Marseille (France) with the organization of Société Nautique de
Marseille: as a matter of fact one out of the three scheduled races could be sailed on
windward-leeward courses in the South bay of Marseille.
At scheduled time, 11.00 hrs. race committee had to postpone the start due to a complete
lack of wind under the rain: at about 2.30 hrs the first start was fired but after the
first mark rounding (first one to round the mark was "Faster K-Yote II" followed
by Swiss "Serono") while the fleet was sailing the first donwind leg the race
had to be abandoned because of a 90° windshift. Finally the race committe could fire a
new race in an Easterly wind up to 8 knots. German defending champion "Faster K-Yote
II" took the lead since the start and sailed in front of the 12 boats fleet until the
finishing line. The second one to cross the finishing line was the Swiss
"Serono" that sailed a true match race with the German red hull, followed by
French "Magician". The race committee starded a second race at about 17.30, but
it had to be abandoned just before the first mark rounding as the wind dropped completely.
Tomorrow some more three races (weather permitting, sun and mistral have been forecast)
are scheduled starting from 11.00 hrs.
